Keith 1 v Fraserburgh 4
MAROONS BATTLE BUT LOSE OUT TO ‘BROCH
Keith’s first outing in a month proved to be a tough ask as they tackled league leaders Fraserburgh in the Highland League Cup at Kynoch Park. Although the Maroons stuck to their task they ended up losing out 4-1 in what was their 254th League Cup match, stretching back 75 years.
With three new recruits in the squad, 17 year old on loan goalie from Aberdeen FC, Jamie Shingler and ex-Varsity player Kieran Mooney were in the starting line-up and ex-Newmachar striker Matthew Tough came on for the last half hour. All three players showed they will be valuable additions.
A bright start went by the wayside in the 13th minute, Scott Barbour giving Shingler no chance from 12 yards. Then as the half hour approached, slack marking allowed Sean Butcher to head home.
Two quick fire goals after the break through ex-Maroons hotshot Gary Harris and an in-off the post effort from Paul Campbell put ‘Broch well in the driving seat. Three chalked off goals and another shot hitting the post made it look as if the visitors were going to run riot.
However, credit to Craig Ewen’s men as they knuckled down and stuck to the task, nabbing a consolation goal with 20 minutes remaining. Substitute Andy Stewart’s shot was blocked and skipper Michael Selfridge pounced to nip the ball over the line from close range for his 4th goal of the season. The battling end to the game was in sharp contrast to the capitulation at ‘Broch in their last outing a few weeks ago when they ended up losing 7-0.
