Keith 0 v Fraserburgh 2

DEADLY TWO MINUTES DUMPS MAROONS

The scene was set in the Kynoch Park autumnal sun for the Maroons to gain three valuable points. There was around 17 Under 10’s from KDSD acting as Mascots, Keith Lawson was on a visit from Cambridgeshire, and...it was Liam Duncan’s 100th competitive appearance.

Unfortunately, despite a better second half display, the Maroons contrived to lose a brace of quickfire goals in the latter stages of the first half, leaving a mountain to climb against a sprightly ‘Broch side. This was the 182nd league meeting between the teams, stretching back to 1924, and the away day win made it 77 wins apiece with 28 draws, finely balanced or what!.

There was a hope that Craig’s Commandos would continue their fine form from midweek at Forres, but they found themselves facing a string of corners in the opening stages. It has to be said though that stand-in goalie Ruaridh Lynch, donning the jersey in place of the unavailable Craig Reid, looked comfortable in between the sticks.

In fact despite not being at their best it was the homesters who almost bulged the old onion bag in the 27th minute when a super curling Zak To edge of the box free kick was brilliantly tipped over the bar by ‘Broch custodian Andy Reid. Shades of free kick experts Charlie Elvin and John “Jigger” Wilson from bygone years from Zak!

Then, as ‘Broch are so often prone to doing, two goals in two minutes bewildered the Kynoch faithful. With 34 minutes on the clock, a Logan Watt cutback saw Scott Barbour sweep home from 8 yards, then barely 120 seconds later the powerful striker repaid the compliment, clipping the ball into the danger area for Watt to smash home from 10 yards.

To be fair the home combine got more into the game after the half-time cuppa and with 71 minutes on the clock, a Jack Searle 12 yard rasper crashed back off the face of the crossbar – jings how close was that! Substitute Nathan McKeown then raced in but dauchled with his parting shot, then ended up being a substituted substitute with what appeared to be an ankle knock!

There was still a modicum of hope in the ranks and with the egg timer running out another pinpoint To free kick from out wide left forced a fine finger tip save from Reid – I was up aff my seat with that one I can tell you!

Sadly, that was the last real chance of a consolation goal, though the second half display was more in keeping with the squad’s capabilities.
