Keith 1 v Fraserburgh 1
SPOT ON CAMMY ON THE BALL!
Well, Keith maybe didna’ win this game, but I’ll tell you what, it was a super day at the Field of Dreams on Saturday. The sun was shining, the 1999-2000 Championship Flag was flying to mark 25 years since that memorable occasion, 15 members of that esteemed squad were in attendance, along with a healthy number in our Sponsors Lounge creating that special match day atmosphere.
Oh aye, and of course the game ended in a 1-1 draw, remarkably the third successive season that the KP League tussle with ‘Broch ended in a draw. The game marked wee Nathan McKeown’s 100th appearance, and Cammy Wilson’s spot kick equaliser, amazingly was the Maroons first penalty award in open play for 15 months!
There really wasn’t much in it in the first half with goalscoring chances at a premium, and it wasn’t until the 24th minute that ‘Broch got their noses in front when a right wing ball came into the danger area and Sean Butcher reacted quickly to stab home from 8 yards – Ach!
Craig Reid kept the Maroons in the game on the stroke of half-time with an instinctive save to deny Logan Watt. After the half-time cuppa the homesters took the game to ‘Broch and McKeown was denied by Joe Barbour at the back post. Then on the hour mark it was level pegging when Brody Alberts pinged through a pass that Cammy Wilson latched onto, and the 18 year old Aberdeen loanee whizzed into the penalty area, only to be sent tumbling by Barbour. The youngster converted the award with great aplomb, sending the goalie one way and the ball the other way, nestling perfectly into the bottom corner of the onion bag. 1-1 and game on Cammy ya beauty!
The Maroons forced a string of corners without reward, though Nathan was denied again who pulled off a fine save to tip over his netbound 16 yarder. Ach, what a pity, that would have been a great way to celebrate his Ton.
Never mind, when the referee Lewis Brown blew his peeper to signal time-up I think both camps understood that a draw was probably the best outcome.
Winding back to the start of the report, I had a super time turning the clock back and reminiscing with the 15 Millennium Champs – all-time greats? I would say so – between them their Keith FC Careers totalled 3787 appearances and an astonishing 516 goals! What a list of stalwarts – Martin Allan, Darren Still (Captain Marvel), Derek Nicol (Deadly Dek), Ian Thain (Thainer), Neil Gibson (Gibby), Keith Watt (Shaggy), Dod Simmers (Young Dod), Kenny Hendry (King Kenny), Neil McPherson (Zico), Keith Robertson, Paul Presslie, Kenny McKenzie, Peter Stewart, Gary Taylor and Michael Brown (Mugsy). Says it all really – OAMAAM!
